A round up of lobbying actions undertaken by the European Chamber during the month of June.
Dinner with Commissioner Karel DeGucht, DG TRADE
On the 21st June, the European Chamber met with European Commissioner for Trade Karel DeGucht. The Commissioner debriefed representatives of the European Chamber on the EU-China Joint Committee meeting, the current EU trade policy agenda, both with China and globally, and briefly mentioned the solar panels case.
The European Chamber debriefed the Commissioner on its strategy and current lobbying priorities. The meeting ended with the European Chamber making two recommendations regarding the definition of private capital used by Chinese authorities and the need for a database tracking Chinese outbound direct investment (ODI) to Europe.
Meeting with European Commissioner Tonio Borg
On 4th June a delegation, led by European Chamber Vice President Stefan Sack, met with Tonio Borg, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, in Shanghai. Stefan presented the Position Paper 2012/2013 to Commissioner Borg. Representatives of the Agriculture, Food and Beverage, Healthcare Equipment, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Working Groups had the opportunity to debrief him on specific industry issues.
Participation at the 15th China Zhejiang Investment & Trade Symposium
On 7th-8th June, the European Chamber Shanghai was invited to attend the 15th China Zhejiang Investment & Trade Symposium in Ningbo. The delegation was led by Shanghai Board Chairman Stefan Sack, and joined by representatives of the Environment, Energy, Construction and Logistics Working Groups who were warmly welcomed by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, Zhejiang Department of Commerce and Zhejiang International Investment Promotion Centre.
The European Chamber representatives had the opportunity to attend an exclusive welcome reception hosted by the Zhejiang Provincial Government on 7th June. Mr Li Qiang, Governor of Zhejiang Province, Mr Chen Deming, former Minister of MOFCOM, and Mr Zhong Shan, Vice-Minister of MOFCOM, met with the Chamber delegation and encouraged the Chamber to enhance cooperation and investment between EU enterprises in China. The Position Paper 2012-2013 and newly released Business Confidence Survey were presented to Governor Li and Vice-Minister Zhong Shan during the reception.
Provincial Campaign
As the Chamber’s provincial campaign continues, the following meetings took place during the month of June:
On 8th June, a Chamber delegation, led by Shanghai Board Chairman Stefan Sack, presented the Position Paper 2012-2013 to Zhang Hongmin, Vice Chairman of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Zhejiang; Chen Zongrao, Deputy Secretary General of Zhejiang Provincial Government; Lu Guohao, Deputy General of Zhejiang Foreign Affairs Office and Ju Yalian, Deputy Director-General of Zhejiang Department of Commerce.
On 14th June, representatives of the European Chamber joined the EU Ambassador’s visit to meet the Governor of Xinjiang Autonomous Region. The two sides discussed EU-China cooperation on Urbanisation, the local interpretation of the ‘Chinese Dream’ and future cooperation.
